Parenting Skills for At-Risk Teens

Teen parents face unique challenges and responsibilities as they navigate the journey of parenthood at a young age. Here are some key things they need to know.

Healthcare: It's crucial for teen parents to prioritize their and their baby's health. This includes seeking prenatal care, attending regular check-ups, and following medical advice. Proper nutrition and exercise are also important for the health of both the mother and the baby.

Education: Finishing high school or pursuing alternative education options can provide better opportunities for both the parent and the child in the future.

Parenting Skills: Teen parents may benefit from parenting classes or workshops to learn essential skills such as feeding, diapering, soothing techniques, and child development. Building a strong bond with their child and providing a nurturing environment is crucial for the child's well-being.

Healthy Relationships: Teen parents should strive to maintain healthy relationships with their partners, family, and friends. Effective communication, trust, and mutual support are important components of healthy relationships, which can provide stability and support for both the parent and the child.

Additional challenges teen parents may face:

  • Lack of support from family, friends, and child’s other parent.
  • Financial strain because raising a child is expensive.
  • Social isolation from peers who are not parenting.
  • Emotional stress for they are still developing emotionally themselves.
  • Limited life experience and not enough maturity to handle the complexities of parenting effectively.
  • Stigma and discrimination and judgment from others.
  • Balancing responsibilities between parenting, school, work, and personal goals.
