FULL TESTIMONIAL OF DR. CAROL COX, Ph.D, TRUMAN UNIVERSITY, MISSOURI
Hi Heather –
I think you’d like the ARISE program – we used it for 2 years to significantly improve anger mgt skills and reduce recidivism to our facility for anger-related behaviors in adjudicated youth. I am on the Board of the Bruce Normile Juvenile Justice Center in Kirksville – we used it for counseling groups, afterschool lessons, youth in detention, youth on probation, youth in residential care. We used the lessons, worksheet, etc – and integrated it into all facets of the facility/programming. The lessons come with pre-post tests for the units. We used that and a standardized instrument for the youth at intake and then as they left the program: 23-item Aggression Scale/Violent Intentions – Teen Conflict Survey.
- The pre-posts can be matched so you can track the kids who drop in and out; the teen conflict survey really gets to the anger issues they come in with – and it’s short enough…
- We used it in detention setting one on one; pre-post tests showed good grades for them –
- Most research was done in juvenile justice setting, residential. Our probation kids are out in the community, tho – and it worked for them.
Hope this helps – feel free to email or call me with any questions or if I can help at all!
