ARISE Simple Acts of Kindness Poster – 4064

“Simple Act of Kindness
AMYGDALA: (pronounced uh-MIG duh-luh)
This is the part of the brain that processes emotional reactions. Science shows that when we enter an unfamiliar or threatening environment the amygdala becomes activated and creates anger and rage, the fight or flight reaction.
Youth in the juvenile justice system are in unfamiliar and threatening environments. When the juvenile officer appears with a stern face and threatening attitude, unconsciously it causes anger and rage to build up in the youth’s brain. If the officer shows a softer side—a smiling, open attitude—chances are the youth will not feel threatened and react in a negative manner.
Studies have shown that a simple act of kindness improves functioning of the immune system. It increases serotonin in the brain for both the person giving the kindness and the one receiving kindness.”
This ARISE poster goes into detail about the Amygdala – the part of the brain where emotional reaction are processed. The description given tells how simple acts of kindness can trigger positive reactions from your learners (and co-workers as well).
