Hi Susan,
Thank you for taking the time to talk with me on last week, it was a pleasant surprise to learn that I was speaking with the ARISE founder when I called.
As I stated, it has been a few years since I took the ARISE 5-Day Master Life-Skill training (2005) but, within a year, I began using the curriculum in my own after school program located in an apartment complex. I have been using the curriculum for at least three consecutive years now, and am well pleased with the results.
I also use it at one of the public middle schools where I partner with another teacher in their after school program in Antioch, California. The teacher and staff rave about the lessons that are presented in a fun, interactive way engaging the students. We are beginning to document our success with the curriculum and after school program. Over the last three years, I have documented in photos the fun, activities and classes that I have held.
I try within the first 2 weeks of meeting new students, to learn their names and something about each of them. I endeavor to nurture them all, and make it a rewarding, personal experience for them while they learn how to handle "life".
I might add that we are invited by the county to participate in their annual county youth summit where we offer a life skill class to a "standing room only" crowd of at least 45 students or more. We are one of the most well attended classes during this time. Usually, I present an opportunity for the students to learn about "Will Smith" (Self-Esteem) then have them write and perform a "positive rap" challenge without using foul language. We have been applauded by our County Supervisor for the work that we are doing...which has everything to do with God first, then the curriculum. It has been a Godsend.
I had worked as an executive office assistant for many years before contracting carpal tunnel syndrome, which, following two surgeries, one on each wrist, prevented me from returning to that type of work. I was looking for something that I would enjoy doing, (and had already begun a small after school program in an apartment complex in my community) when I saw the ARISE Life-Skill Curriculum and Training on the internet. Needless to say, through much prayer, and through my very capable vocational rehab counselor, we were able to convince the State of California Vocational Rehab Dept. to send me to Florida to attend the Master Training Program. This is something that was not "done" in California to send someone out of state for voc. rehab training. But I got my prayer granted, and today I am enjoying teaching the curriculum.

Sending your staff to the week-long training would be an awesome experience for them, especially if you have a staff of young adults. My two mentors came back totally energized and are able to handle all groups of youth and teens. The training is very detailed and worth every penny.
ARISE has given structure to our mentoring program. We have basically changed our focus from one-on-one mentoring to group mentoring because of the ARISE program. We are currently running and after school program in a local elementary school and are using the ARISE method of teaching for "hard-to-handle" students … simply put … it works.
Also, the support you will receive from the ARISE Foundation after you (or your staff) leaves training is priceless.
